HISTORY

The Armenian National Paralympic Committee was established in 1994 with the mission of developing Paralympic sport in Armenia, promoting inclusion, and ensuring the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in sporting life.

Since its inception, the Committee has systematically built a national framework enabling Armenian athletes to integrate into the international Para sport movement and compete at the highest level. Over the years, Armenian athletes have represented the country at the Paralympic Games across a range of disciplines, including sailing, Para athletics, Para powerlifting, Para swimming, and Para alpine skiing.

In recent years, Para sport in Armenia has demonstrated significant progress. Athletes have particularly excelled in shot put, achieving highly competitive results at the international level. Marked improvements have also been observed among wheelchair racers and track athletes. In Para powerlifting, Armenian athletes have delivered strong performances at the Paralympic Games, securing placements between 4th and 13th positions-an indicator of the sport’s steady and sustainable development.

The advancement of young athletes is especially noteworthy. The new generation of Para powerlifters is already ranked among the world’s elite, with three Armenian athletes currently holding World and European records, further strengthening the country’s international standing.

The Committee continues to expand its scope by developing emerging and перспективные disciplines. These include wheelchair basketball, canoe, Para table tennis, and Para taekwondo. Armenia is also unique in the region for having a sledge hockey team. In parallel, wheelchair curling and boccia are being actively developed, broadening participation opportunities within Para sport.

Today, the Armenian National Paralympic Committee serves as a leading force in advancing inclusive sport in Armenia-driving both athletic excellence and the promotion of equal opportunities, while fostering a culture of inclusion across society.
